He burst into tears, looking over at her with sad, desperate eyes. He tried convincing himself it was just his imagination tricking him. He scoffed, refusing to believe she was actually there. He looked over at the window, seeing his wife standing there, frowning solemnly. I messed that up so badly.like I always do.He thought, letting his tears fall. He sighed and slammed his hands on the table, bowing his head down in shame. Richard watched them both leave with sad, tired eyes. Anais held it together, but was still letting tears cascade down her cheeks as she slowly stood up and left the room as well. He couldn't let his kids see him cry, but it was hard when Gumball's words echoed in his head and stabbed his heart like a knife.ĭarwin instantly ran out of the room and out the backdoor, beginning to cry uncontrollably. Richard stared down, defeated, and uncertain on what to do. Silence filled the air once again, this time with higher tension, and visible tears in everyone's eyes. But he stopped when hearing a door slam from upstairs. "Gumball!" Richard said, standing up from his chair. "Just." Gumball breathed, then stormed away with a bitter mumble, "Leave us just like she did." "Gumball-" Richard spoke, barely above a whisper. "She's not here! And she's never coming back! So just get over it, would you?! She died and there's nothing you can do about it! Get that in your head like the rest of us have!" He was angry and shouting, but anyone could see and hear his hurt. "No, but guess what, Dad?! Mom is dead!" Gumball snapped, taking everyone aback. "So, would you be doing any of this if your mother were here?!" Richard asked, raising his voice. "Yeah, thats right, I know about the parties, the drugs, the alcohol, the cigarettes, everything." Richard nodded, "And I know that you know damn well you're making bad decisions."
Gumball's eyes widened slightly, as did his siblings'. "I'm smart enough to know you're doing things you're not supposed to be doing." He furrowed his brows, lowering his rabbit ears. Richard tried not to get upset with him, but it was hard when hearing the tone in his son's voice. "Do you really think tomorrow we're just gonna wake up and everything will be okay? Do you honestly think thats how this shit works?!" Gumball asked, beginning to grow upset and frustrated. Richard frowned, realizing he could've chosen his words a little better. "Fix things?" Gumball asked, raising his head to finally look at his father. And I know its affected all of us badly, but that doesn't mean we can't fix things." "Kids.if not now, then when?" He asked, "I miss your mother, too. They've all been bottling this up for too long. It broke his heart to see them so vulnerable. Richard frowned, hearing the sadness in their voices. "Me neither." Anais said, bowing her head. "Okay kids, its been over a month now." He spoke, pushing away his plate, "I think its about time we say what we're all thinking." He'd have to talk to them like adults, and not like children. His kids were no longer the innocent, respectful little angels they once were. He tried being a good father, he tried doing what he used to do. Richard sighed, letting his fake smile fade away. Even though her comment came off as rude, Richard just nodded in agreement, since it wasn't technically wrong. "Its a wonder how you ever graduated." Anais mumbled. "Hey now, I get what you're going through." Richard said, "I mean, just imagine how bad my grades were in school." "So Darwin, have you found anyone to tutor you? Say, a classmate or a friend?"ĭarwin shook his head, repeatedly poking the fork into his food. He looked over at his adoptive son, figuring his situation would be the easiest to discuss first. Oh Nicole, what would you do? He wondered anxiously. Richard opened his mouth to speak, but gave up and shook his head with a sigh. "You really want us to answer that?" Anais asked knowingly, since they all knew the answer to the question. "So kids, how was school today?" He asked. He decided he could just start with casual conversation, like he always tried. He was aware of Darwin's bad grades, Anais' insecurities, and Gumball's drugs. His therapist had told him the first step to helping them was to address their issues.īut how could he address them? He knew damn well what was going on in their lives and they hadn't even told them. He frowned, seeing all three of his kids just staring down at their untouched food blankly. He hadn't eaten like he used to in a while, and he was getting noticeably skinner than normal. Silence filled the air at the dinner table.
